SEE JAYNE BLOG

Dec 26

A decade of blogging!

Today marks the 10th anniversary of my public life on the internet. I think that warrants some reflective rambling. (Don’t worry, we’ll soon return to our normally scheduled programming.)

On Dec. 26th, 2001 at 5:28 pm I posted my first entry on Diaryland.

I won’t link to that old blog since its far too embarrassing though if you really wanted to find it, it wouldn’t be that hard. I was in high school and had all the typical teen angst, which I would go into great detail about because at the time it felt like no one was reading it. It felt anonymous even though it was public.

What started as a highly personal and self expressive space, within a few years, became self-censored as I began to find out who was reading the things I was writing. I’m not sure if it’s because I was growing out of the hyper-personal stuff as the teen angst faded, or if it was because the internet was starting to feel too public. Or if things on the internet just got a lot funnier and more interesting than my own life.

Now I rarely write about my personal life online. Partially because I realize my online self is a sort of brand where I feel like I can’t be overly open, professional reputation and all that. And so now we have the whole slew of people who tumble as blogging. Artist as curator. Obviously, I do it too. The majority of this tumblr is just stuff I like. But how much can you tell about a person’s life by the things they reblog? I guess there’s an element of archeology to it, assembling the bits that people gather to try and understand what that person was really like.
